iPhone 5 vs Galaxy S3

So I recently had a tough decision to make. It had been a couple of years since I had made a change, and a new companion was needed.  The old companion, small and black, had been through quite a few adventures, even though I’d broken its back a few times. Yup, it was time to replace my iPhone 4 and upgrade to a new cell phone.  First world problems right?

So the decision was really between the Samsung Galaxy S3, and the iPhone 5. Now that debate has been talked about by both sides almost as fervently as the debate between Xbox and PlayStation fans, but I’ve always been someone that’s in the middle. I’m the optimist and I can see the best of both worlds.  A decision has to be made, and I’m using my blog online to help me make that decision.

First up: Thoughts on the Samsung Galaxy. I’ve had an android system phone before, and I liked it a lot. I had the very first android phone that came out for Verizon, the original DROID. That phone was extremely similar to the iPhone of that time, as it had the touch screen and the ability to download all sorts of apps. But as the android system has changed, they have made it their point to show how customizable their system is.
And that is the big selling point of the S3. The android system is now on the “Jelly Bean” System, its newest one, allowing more customization, but making it a little bit harder to use. The amount of features on the S3 is staggering though: facial recognition, gesture typing, an FM tuner, and even that sweet ability to just touch phones together to share data. It allows you to change your background, order of the apps, and the look and feel of your phone to make it yours.
The S3 has a pretty good size screen, 4.8 inches, and a 720p display, the phone is 8.6mm thick, and has a removable battery.  All in all, not a bad phone.

The iPhone 5 is the big upgrade, and the seamless transition for me from my old phone. I got the iPhone when my old droid had broken, and really enjoyed using it ever since I got it. One of the best things that this phone was able to do for me is allow me to combine my iPod with the phone so that I had an all in one media center. While this phone doesn’t have the same sort of options that the S3 has, nor does it have the removable battery, it still is a formidable option.  It has the ease of use that makes it the most popular phone on the market. The 4 inch screen and 7.6mm thickness are afterthoughts, as the iPhone is able to plug and play into your computer to make it work right out of the box. If you’ve had an iPhone or an iPod previously, this is the easiest transition possible.

Overall, they’re both really good phones, and you can’t really go wrong in any way. I ended up sticking with what I know and getting the white iPhone 5. So far I’ve been pretty happy with it, as it’s lighter than the 4, and has the awesome 4G speeds. Both phones are awesome, and as long as you aren’t getting a Windows phone…you can’t go wrong. I guess the lesson here is: stick with what you know.
